Janson RAD, a one-man indie developer with 15 years of experience as an animator, and Fireshine Games, a global publisher based in London, UK, officially released the 2D side-scrolling shooting action game ‘Gunboat God’ on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on April 13.
The game features rich content, including a total of 180 levels, over 20 types of missions, and multi-stage boss battles. It is garnering attention for its doodle-style visuals, which blend black-and-white characters with colorful backgrounds, combined with arcade vibes and heavy metal sound.
The essence of arcade shooting, cutting through the waves and sweeping away enemies
Gunboat God is a chaotic arcade shooting game where you fight hordes of enemies while cutting through the waves using various weapons such as cannons, lasers, bombs, and vaporizers.
Players must escape unknown regions to return to the Citadel in the Sky, coping with various environmental threats while modifying a gunboat to traverse the water, underwater, and air. An alligator mechanic named ‘Yeti’ accompanies the adventure to assist with strengthening and upgrading the gunboat.
The game is designed with a mission-based structure where players clear short stages in succession to upgrade weapons, skills, and stats. In particular, multi-stage boss battles and a score competition system provide motivation for replay. With a total of 180 levels and over 20 mission types available, ingenious missions such as Collision Course, Survival Battle, and ‘Boil?’ stimulate diverse challenges every time.
The clash between doodle-like black-and-white characters and a full-color world
The visuals are also a major feature of this work. It is graffiti-style. The dood-like art design, black-and-white doodle-style characters, and vivid backgrounds create a strong contrast, realizing a unique visual effect. In particular, the combination of exaggerated cartoon animations and retro arcade vibes completes a game style that is distinctly different from typical retro visual games.
The soundtrack alternates between ear-piercing heavy metal tracks and nostalgic classic arcade-style music, bringing out both the excitement and rhythm of the battles. The overall atmosphere is rough and comical, yet faithfully captures the addictive charm of arcade shooting games.
