• The third challenge of ‘Artificer’, an emerging powerhouse in the tactics and strategy genre
  • A reverse-thinking design that overturns mythology… Building and defending the labyrinth as a Minotaur

Global indie game publisher Devolver Digital and Warsaw-based developer Artificer officially released the maze-building roguelike ‘MINOS’ on the PC Steam platform on April 9.

The game unfolds with a unique setting in which the player becomes a legendary monster, the Minotaur, rather than a hero, and defends the sanctuary from a group of adventurers who invade the labyrinth in pursuit of honor and wealth. It is attracting attention as a work that combines strategic trap design with a narrative that turns myths upside down.

Master of the Labyrinth, Not a Hero… A Counter-Intuitive Design That Turns Myths Upside Down

Traditional Minotaur myths are typically narrated from the perspective of the hero Theseus. However, ‘Minos’ completely overturns this structure. Players become the Minotaur, designing the labyrinth themselves and setting traps to await intruders.

Adventurers hear rumors of a monster lurking in the darkness and come seeking honor and wealth, but what awaits at the end is none other than the player themselves. Various strategies are possible, such as creating long mazes by freely arranging walls, doors, and passages, or dispersing the party using rotating passages and moving doors. The essence of this game is constructing your own Killzone aesthetic, whether brutal or cunning.

Strategic gameplay perfected by designing chain traps

The trap system in ‘Minos’ goes beyond simple placement to lead to systematic chain reactions. Every element—including spikes, rocks, blades, and fire traps—can be connected in complex structures, and pressure plates can be utilized to design a system where everything explodes simultaneously the moment invaders are mistaken for advancing. With new enemies, traps, and strategies unfolding in every round, the same labyrinth never exists twice.

The visuals are realized through colorful, stylized 3D graphics, creating an atmosphere where fairytale-like and eerie vibes coexist. The portrayal of adventurers falling into traps is closer to humorous cartoon violence than brutality, delivering the genre’s signature thrill without being overwhelming. The sound design is also praised for balancing the overwhelming atmosphere of ancient mythology with urgent strategic tension.

Along with strategic fun, the narrative depth is also a noteworthy element. As you play, the Minotaur’s past and human side are revealed, and the story of why he became this being unfolds.

The development team behind ‘Schmerian Six’ with 93% and 94% positive reviews takes on a third challenge

Artificer is a small, Warsaw-based studio consisting of 14 developers that has been creating unique games as part of the Devolver Digital family since its founding in 2019. By releasing the turn-based tactical game ‘Showgunners (2023)’ and the real-time tactical stealth game ‘Sumerian Six (2024)’ in succession, the company has established itself as a powerhouse in the tactical and strategy genres, with both titles recording 93–94% positive ratings on Steam.

The creative director of Artificer stated, “While we previously tried to analyze the market, this time we focused purely on the game we wanted to make,” emphasizing that ‘Minos’ is a more experimental project. ‘Minos,’ the third work from this studio that experiments with genre boundaries, is drawing attention for reinterpreting existing roguelike and tower defense formulas around the unique axis of maze construction.

Community anticipation high following demo reveal… Positive reviews immediately after launch

Minos was first unveiled at the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct in September 2025, simultaneously with the release of a Steam demo, and has been highly anticipated by the community even before its launch. Immediately after its official release, it currently boasts an 80% positive user rating on Steam and is actively communicating with domestic fans through Devolver Digital Korea’s official X (@Devolverkr). The game supports the Korean language.
