- New title from Polish indie studio BLUM Entertainment implements a Slavic fantasy worldview
- Replayability enhanced with indirect rule, 12 story missions, and the Heritage System
An unconventional strategy game that overturns the grammar of classic RTS has emerged. Polish indie studio BLUM Entertainment officially released the fantasy real-time strategy game ‘Crown of Greed’ on Steam on March 31.
The game was created inspired by the classic RTS masterpiece ‘Majesty’ and sought to differentiate itself from existing strategy games through an indirect control system utilizing gold instead of directly commanding units, and unique hero designs.
Moved by ‘gold’ instead of commands… The unique charm of indirect rule
The most distinctive feature of ‘Crown of Grid’ is that players do not issue direct commands to units. Instead of giving individual orders to heroes or subjects, players induce their actions through rewards and bounties utilizing gold.
For example, if you want to eliminate a monster lair, you can place a bounty, and if you want to have them explore dangerous ruins, you can announce a reward. Characters move autonomously according to their own desires, fears, and tendencies, and players must utilize this strategically. This is a different approach from the conventions of traditional RTS games where soldiers are controlled with a single click.
The game is set in the fantasy kingdom of Rodovia, inspired by European folklore. You will traverse dense forests, swamps, and frozen wastelands, facing off against various monsters such as basilisks, dragooners, and the legendary witch Baba Yaga. You can use magic when gold is ineffective, and as your base grows, new spells and powerful abilities are unlocked.
Random Trait Heroes and ‘Heritage Point’ System
The hero system is also eye-catching. Recruited heroes possess random traits and have both strengths and weaknesses. Various characters appear, such as warriors who are strong against specific monsters but have low health, and rogues with hidden weaknesses, expanding the range of strategic choices.
Additionally, permanent kingdom upgrades can be unlocked through the ‘Heritage Point’ system accumulated during the campaign. This allows players to start subsequent scenarios under more favorable conditions, reinforcing the motivation for replay.
Simultaneous release of 12 story missions and Supporter Pack DLC
The game consists of a total of 12 story missions. Each mission offers significantly deeper content compared to the initial demo, and some scenarios adopt a non-linear structure where objectives change depending on the player’s choices. It is characterized by enhanced replay value by presenting diverse solutions rather than focusing solely on clearing missions.
An optional supporter pack DLC was also released alongside the base game. It targets the fanbase by including a digital art book of over 90 pages, an original soundtrack of about 50 minutes, and high-resolution wallpapers.
A new release from a Polish indie studio… a culmination of the previous work’s experience
Development was handled by the Polish indie studio BLUM Entertainment, while publishing was handled by ConsoleWay and PlayWay SA . BLUM Entertainment is a team that gained experience in developing strategy games through their previous work, Builders of Greece.
Project leader August Maciejkowicz stated, “We actively incorporated the know-how regarding graphics optimization, gameplay design, and replayability gained from the previous work into this title.” George Ledoux provided the in-game narration, and Polish artists contributed to the music and art to capture the unique atmosphere of Slavic folklore.
Expectations and concerns coexist amidst favorable reviews of the demonstration
The demo version released in January 2025 garnered anticipation, recording a ‘very positive’ rating on Steam. It received high interest, particularly from the Majesty series fanbase, leading to a rapid increase in wishlists and even an early launch discount through community events.
However, some users expressed disappointment that the demo was removed just before release, citing the difficulty in verifying the game’s quality in advance. On the other hand, the fact that it faithfully inherited the essence of the original game has led to positive reviews.
The developer plans to actively collect bug reports and balance feedback through the Steam forums and Discord after release.
