Bonte Avond, a developer founded by a Belgian indie musician duo, and publisher offbrand games officially released the comedy tactical adventure ‘Bonnie Bear Saves Frogtime’ on Steam and Nintendo Switch on March 16.
Based on a unique adventure genre that combines comedy and tactical elements, the game features a bizarre world where all events unfold around frog battles. To celebrate the launch, a 15% discount is currently available on Steam.
A unique world where everything is solved through frog battles
The game begins at the birthday party of Bonnie Bear, whose self-esteem has hit rock bottom. Her joy at receiving a tote bag from her friends is short-lived, however, as local bully Rik Spek appears, eats the cake, steals Bonnie’s pink shell, and runs away.
As her friend Anne gets trapped inside the shell, Bonnie embarks on a journey to collect four magical shells from around the world to save Anne and Frogtime. Absurd situations continue endlessly, such as infiltrating a beehive (disguised as a bee) and racing a sled against a vampire, and eventually, all of the world’s problems are solved by the frog battle ‘Frogtime’.
Lineless vector art… 2000s indie animation vibes
The game’s visuals adopt a cartoon-style vector art that omits outlines. Characters and backgrounds rendered solely through coloring create a soft yet lively impression, while the designs of each region and character possess a unique and lovable personality.
The soft colors and direction evoke the peculiar and warm atmosphere characteristic of early 2000s indie animation. Unique characters such as a raccoon merchant, skeleton brothers, and a resident in a bee costume appear, adding small joys to every conversation.
However, it is pointed out as a regrettable element that some animations feel somewhat stiff and dialogue boxes obscure the characters.
Soundtrack created by a musician duo… A music-driven game
Music is by far the most brilliant element of this game. The background of the development team’s two founders, who were originally indie musicians, is fully infused throughout the game. The soundtrack, a blend of lo-fi, acoustic, and comedic music, goes beyond simple background music and can even be played directly within the game as separate interactive music sequences.
The music, tailored to each scene—such as a theme song that aligns with Rick Speck’s character or a ballad capturing Bonnie’s emotions—enhances the game’s emotional completeness. However, the lack of a skip function for music sequences is pointed out as a drawback, as it forces players to participate in the instrumental parts even when they wish to focus on combat.
Full voice dubbing… ‘Raw charm’ that leaves even mistakes intact
All NPCs in the game are voice-dubbed, with the development team, friends, and popular creator guest voice actors participating. In particular, mistakes and ad-libs in some scenes were preserved to maintain a “raw acting” style, which actually serves to reinforce the game’s unique personality and warmth.
While the approach of having a small number of voice actors perform various characters in diverse tones may feel somewhat awkward at first, it is ultimately praised for establishing the distinctive identity of handmade indie games. However, the inconsistent volume and sound quality across different voice actors are cited as a regrettable aspect.
From indie musician duo to developers… Bonte Avond and offbrand games
Bonte Avond is an independent development studio founded by an indie musician duo. Their previous work, ‘Once Upon A Jester,’ which focused on live performances, formed a cult following with its unique atmosphere and solidified their position in the indie scene. Additionally, ‘Everybody Wham Wham,’ released in 2021, also garnered attention for its unique concept of a snowman-building competition.
96% Positive Demo… Favorable Reviews Continue After Official Release
The Steam demo released prior to launch received a “Very Positive” rating, with 96% of the 81 reviews being positive. Media reaction has also been overwhelmingly favorable. Game8 described it as a “charming adventure that balances comedy and seriousness,” while Gamer Social Club praised it as a “weird, musical, and deeply engaging game.”
The total playtime is approximately 10 to 12 hours depending on the exploration method, and after completing the game, a bonus challenge and 20 additional achievements are provided.
