Heavy Lunch Studio, an indie developer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, officially released its debut title, “Hermit and Pig,” on Steam on February 5th. This story-driven, turn-based adventure RPG has garnered attention for its unique concept: a socially anxious hermit and his pig embark on a mushroom-hunting adventure. Immediately following its release, the game has garnered critical acclaim, earning 95 points (RPG Fan), 91 points (AV Club), and 90 points (Loot Level Chill).
A debut work developed by childhood friends who have known each other for 20 years
Heavy Lunch Studio co-founders Mason Dickerson and Nathan Kennedy created “Hermit and Pig,” but they’ve been friends since childhood, collaborating on music and writing. Twenty years later, they reunited to complete their first game. Describing themselves as “obsessive musicians, writers, and designers,” they created every element of the game themselves, including the game design, code, sound, and music.
Dickerson is an illustrator and cartoonist known for the “Housecat Trouble” series published by Random House Graphic, while Kennedy is a developer with nearly a decade of software development experience. Their combined creative talents result in a unique pixel art style and a xylophone-infused soundtrack.
Hermits and Pigs Against Corporate Conspiracy
The game follows the story of an elderly recluse, Hermit, and his only friend, a pig, who are unwillingly drawn into a corporate conspiracy that threatens the local population and wildlife. With the local factory laid off and a shady corporation taking over, the two protagonists embark on a quest to find the legendary giant mushroom, the “Jumbo Fungo.”
Players will venture out from the Hermit’s hideout to forage for mushrooms, battle hostile wildlife and corporate forces, and investigate strange events in search of a mythical mushroom that holds the key to restoring balance.
A unique combat system inspired by classic RPGs.
‘Hermit and Pig’ features a timing-based combat system inspired by the Earthbound, Paper Mario, and Mario & Luigi series. Players input fighting game-inspired key combinations to perform a variety of attacks, including punches, kicks, and stomps. While battles are turn-based, each turn has a time limit, ensuring a constant sense of tension.
Of particular note is the game’s exceptional accessibility. The development team has carefully considered the game’s accessibility, offering a variety of options, including difficulty selection (Easy, Normal, Hard), a simplified keybind option, a timer disablement, and a story mode, ensuring that both seasoned and novice gamers can find a suitable experience to suit their playstyle.
Mushroom foraging and anti-capitalist message in a game
The game’s most unique element is its implementation of the protagonist Hermit’s social anxiety as a real-world game mechanic. Dialogue sequences unfold like battles, and incorrect dialogue choices inflict “embarrassment damage” that reduces HP. This is being praised as an attempt to authentically capture the experiences of those with social anxiety, conveying a critique of capitalism and the importance of local community through the game’s signature wit and humor.
A cozy 6-8 hour adventure that received rave reviews upon release.

Loot Level Chill: 90/100 (“A unique and charming RPG with fast-paced combat and a cozy atmosphere”).
The game’s playtime is around 6-8 hours, which isn’t particularly long, but it offers a dense experience in a short amount of time. The hand-drawn pixel art style and xylophone-inspired soundtrack also complement the game’s unique atmosphere.
