A new turning point for deck-building strategy games, with new game modes and playable clans.
The original popular clan ‘Wormkin’ will be provided simultaneously as a free update.

Global indie game publisher Devolver Digital has released the first large-scale paid DLC, “Descendants of the Rail,” for the deck-building strategy game “Monster Train 2,” developed by Big Fan Publishing and Shiny Shoe, on February 2nd (local time).

As of January 2026, Monster Train 2 has sold over 500,000 copies in just eight months since its release, continuing the reputation of its predecessor. It is a popular game with over 95% of Steam users giving it an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ or ‘very positive’ rating.

The Beginning of a New Challenge: Soul Savior Mode

The centerpiece of this DLC is the all-new Soul Savior game mode, which challenges players to free powerful souls from the unstoppable Mother of Life and her twisted children.

A key feature that differentiates the game from existing modes is the freedom to choose bosses. Players can face the new bosses in any order they choose, and each boss they defeat grants enhanced rewards instead of accumulating curses. This strategic design allows players to balance risk and reward.

The “souls” earned as battle rewards go beyond simple collection. Souls liberated from bosses can be equipped to cards in your deck to grant them a variety of powerful effects. The accumulated power greatly expands the game’s meta and strategic options. Furthermore, new enemies appear in keeping with the “cosmic” theme, further diversifying the combat dynamics.

From enemy to ally, join the ‘Descendants of the Railroad’ clan.

This DLC introduces the Descendants of the Rail, the clan that created the trains players have ridden throughout the series, as a playable faction for the first time. These two new characters are playable across all game modes and existing content.

The first character is Herzal, a master blacksmith. He created the tracks and Boneshaker trains that players have been on, and he serves as the clan leader. The second character is Heph, a powerful hammer-wielding being who created the Covenant’s Outpost and the Skullcrusher engine.

The addition of the Descendants of the Railroad clan goes beyond simple character expansion and provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the series’ worldview.

A gift for fans of the original, the Wormkin Clan is back for free.

Separate from the DLC, Shiny Shoe will be adding the Wurmkin clan, a beloved clan from the original Monster Train, as a free update on February 2nd. The Wurmkin are a powerful clan that rose from the depths of hell, known for their strengths in area-of-effect buffs and spell management.

The developers have revealed that Wormkin’s abilities have been completely reworked to align with the systems and design of Monster Train 2. This is expected to provide both nostalgic memories for fans of the original game and new strategic options for newcomers.

Continuous expansion, a challenge for tacticians

The “Destiny Given to the Descendants of the Railroad” DLC is an extension of several free content updates delivered since launch. The developers plan to continuously provide tacticians with new challenges and strategic possibilities, and this DLC promises to be the largest expansion yet.

“Monster Train 2” is a deck-building strategy game based on the original game’s unique three-tiered battlefield structure, depicting a temporary alliance of angels and demons facing a desperate enemy force. The core fun lies in managing five playable clans, each with distinct strengths, and combining a vast card pool to build synergy.

The DLC supports Korean and is playable on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version will be released at a later date.
