Indie game studio Novaxjoy, based in South Jeolla Province, has announced that it will release its upcoming casual roguelike action game Cave Survival later this December.
The project was developed with support from the Jeonnam Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency through its JNGC Game Production Support Program.

Cave Survival is the result of a six-month development cycle, during which Novaxjoy received funding and institutional support aimed at improving production quality and market competitiveness. The game is currently in final platform review and is preparing for a near-term commercial launch.

Strengthening Regional Studios Through Structured Support

The JNGC Game Production Support Program is a strategic initiative designed to enhance the competitiveness of regional game developers. From June to November 2025, Novaxjoy leveraged the program to recruit additional staff, refine visual design, and expand in-game content.

According to the developer, the program played a key role in allowing the studio to pursue areas that are often difficult for small indie teams to tackle independently, including talent acquisition and production scalability.

“Thanks to this support, we were able to complete the game we had planned and prepare it for release,” a Novaxjoy representative said. “As a small indie studio, this opportunity allowed us to take on challenges that would have otherwise been difficult. We hope Cave Survival becomes a representative success case of the support program.”

A Plush Guardian Battles Nightmares

Cave Survival is a top-down roguelike action game in which players take control of a brave plush guardian doll fighting endless nightmare creatures to protect its sleeping owner. The game combines an auto-attack survival structure with responsive hack-and-slash controls, creating dense, fast-paced combat and skill-driven gameplay.

Key Features

  • Escalating Nightly Challenges
Each in-game night introduces stronger waves of nightmare enemies, encouraging players to adapt and improve with every run.
  • Strategic Character Builds
Players collect powerful skills and experiment with unique ability combinations to craft personalized combat styles, reinforcing the genre’s “one more run” appeal.
  • Multiple Playstyles
A variety of guardian dolls are available, each featuring distinct stats, abilities, and play patterns. Precision movement and tactical positioning are emphasized in the game’s fast-paced top-down perspective.

Part of the ‘Survivors-Like’ Roguelike Evolution

Cave Survival aligns with the growing popularity of the so-called “Survivors-like” or reverse bullet-hell subgenre, which gained mainstream attention following the success of Vampire Survivors in 2021. While drawing from familiar genre mechanics, the game distinguishes itself through its contrast between a charming plush protagonist and grotesque nightmare enemies.

The title is scheduled for release on PC (Steam) and mobile platforms (Android/iOS), reflecting a multi-platform strategy aimed at broad accessibility.

Looking Ahead

With its distinctive theme, accessible yet deep roguelike systems, and strong regional backing, Cave Survival is positioned as a promising showcase of Jeonnam-based indie game development. Industry observers will be watching closely to see how the title performs upon launch—and whether it can stand out in an increasingly competitive survival-action market.
