Rhythm hacking action set in a neon cyberpunk world… New trailer released at GDC 2026

Orange County, California-based developer Ridiculous Games and publisher Acclaim will release their rhythm-based cyber dungeon crawler GRIDbeat! simultaneously on Nintendo Switch and Steam (PC) on March 26th.

The development team confirmed the release with a new gameplay trailer at GDC 2026’s indie game showcase, “The Mix & Kinda Funny Spring Game Showcase.” A playable demo is also available for free on Steam.

Hacking was successful, now we must escape.

The story of “Gridbeat!” begins shortly after a massive hacking operation. Players infiltrate Knoss.OS, the most heavily fortified corporate network on Earth, and successfully steal a data payload of immense value. But the real problem lies ahead.

Trapped inside a mainframe, the gamer must find an escape route while being pursued by security systems and hostile malware. There’s only one way to escape: move in rhythm and synchronize with the network before the system completely locks down.

Inside the mainframe, a neon-filled virtual maze unfolds. Players must evade security programs, solve puzzles, and confront Cyber.Mind, the powerful AI boss that dominates the mainframe, to secure the final escape port.

All actions are performed to the beat of the music.

Gridbeat’s core philosophy is simple and clear: movement, combat, and interaction all require a beat. Missing the beat can destabilize the system and potentially lead to dangerous situations. While similar in genre to the rhythm-driven dungeon crawler “Crypt of the NecroDancer,” Gridbeat establishes its own unique direction by incorporating cyberpunk hacking aesthetics and neon-inspired visuals.

Levels are more like tactical puzzles. While they appear arcade-like, they actually require both rhythm and path-finding, and the tension is heightened by the presence of hazards like Server Format, which can reset the entire level. Acquiring and installing powerful software tools unlocks new abilities and power-ups, allowing you to uncover hidden secrets and build for more complex challenges.

The game’s soundtrack isn’t just background music. Every movement, ability activation, and attack is synchronized to the beat of the music, making gameplay feel like a performance. “‘Gridbeat!’ is a game built around rhythm,” says Senior Producer Jaime Bencia. “Every movement and combat is synchronized to an electronic soundtrack.”

Rhythm action game created by veteran developers

Ridiculous Games, formerly known as Digital Funk Machine and Hijinx Games, is an interactive game developer based in Orange County, California. Founded in 2017, the studio is comprised of industry veterans with over 20 years of experience, spanning nearly every platform. Gridbeat is Ridiculous Games’ latest rhythm-action adventure, presented in partnership with Acclaim.

Founded in 1987, publisher Acclaim is best known for publishing hit games like “Mortal Kombat,” “Turok,” and “NBA Jam.” After a long hiatus following its 2004 bankruptcy, Acclaim recently reinvented itself as an indie game publisher, and “Griddle Beat!” is one of the projects representing this resurgence.

Exposure Strategies Built from Steam Next Fest to GDC

This isn’t Gridbeat’s first GDC trailer release. They first revealed a playable demo ahead of the Steam Next Fest Edition on February 4th, and a Nintendo Switch eShop demo followed that same month. Then, on February 19th, they officially announced a March 26th release date at The Mix: Indie Fan Fest Showcase, along with an in-depth gameplay trailer narrated by the development team’s Senior Producer.

This new trailer, unveiled at the Mix & Kinda Funny Showcase at GDC 2026, is the final push to build anticipation with just two weeks left until launch.

Gridbeat will be released simultaneously on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam on March 26th . A playable demo is currently available for free on Steam.
