Global game publisher Chorus Worldwide has officially announced that the release date of “Coffee Talk Tokyo,” the new indie visual novel series “Coffee Talk” in collaboration with Indonesian indie studio Toge Production, has been postponed from the originally scheduled March 5, 2026, to May 21.
This work will be released through PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch, and will support nine languages, including Korean.
The development team stated about the decision to postpone the release, “We need additional development time to provide the best experience for gamers,” and “A delay of about two and a half months will allow us to increase the completeness of the game and provide a more stable playing environment.”
From Seattle to Tokyo, new stages and characters
The “Coffee Talk” series, which debuted in 2020, has been beloved by gamers worldwide for its unique gameplay, which involves playing as a barista, listening to customers’ stories and serving them warm beverages. While previous installments were set in a fictional New Seattle, this “Coffee Talk Tokyo,” true to its title, takes place in a late-night cafe in Tokyo.
Set in a modern Tokyo filled with cyberpunk neon signs and skyscrapers, players take on the role of a barista, serving a diverse clientele of humans and yokai. The characters, drawn from Japanese folklore and legends, offer a new cultural sensibility.
A diverse cast of unique characters visit the café with their own concerns and stories, including Kenji, a kappa employee nearing retirement; Erika, a fox mermaid; Hendry Flong, a cat-eared mermaid from the previous game; and Bean, the barista’s assistant. The story centers around the theme of young and old people grappling with new beginnings and change.
Evolved gameplay and lo-fi soundtrack
“Coffee Talk Tokyo” retains the core elements of its predecessor while adding new features. Players can now brew both hot and cold drinks, and even create more creative drinks with latte art using sprinkle stencils.
Additionally, players can glimpse into the daily lives of their guests through the in-game social network “Tomodachill,” which allows them to discover hidden conversation options. The type of drink offered by the player alters the direction of the conversation, and the branching storyline, leading to multiple endings, remains intact.
Andrew Jeremy (AJ), the composer behind the previous installment, returns to present a new soundtrack of lo-fi jazz and calm beats, capturing the essence of a Tokyo summer night. The soothing music and relaxed conversations are a unique part of the “Coffee Talk” series.
A free Steam trial is available, with a limited edition also coming soon.
A limited edition will also be released alongside the official launch. Consisting of a 10-track sound album with a city pop vibe, a Seattle prologue chapter, and an in-game digital artbook, it will offer fans a special experience.
A free trial version is currently available on Steam, and as of May 29, 2025, it has 100% positive user reviews. Reviews are continuing, with comments such as, “I’m looking forward to the full version,” “The unique, relaxing atmosphere is emphasized,” and “The Japanese setting is refreshing.”
“Coffee Talk Tokyo” was first revealed through Nintendo’s Indie World in August 2024, and has already garnered enthusiastic interest from series fans even before its release. Originally scheduled for a March release, the development team’s decision to postpone the release to improve quality has been met with generally positive responses from fans. This heartwarming story set against the backdrop of a Tokyo nightscape is now set to meet gamers worldwide on May 21, 2026.
